The dpkg telminal log shows the line "Aborting MariaDB installation."

This means that you have opted to abort the installation. If you want to
install MariaDB, you should select "Yes" in the confirmation screen, not
abort it.

   package mariadb-server-5.5 automatically aborts downgrading but users don't 
read the dpkg terminal output to see this
