For those interested, I created a simple Nautilus extension that adds "Open as Administrator" and "Edit as Administrator" entries to the context menu.
It's in the official Ubuntu and Debian repositories. Just enable the "backports" repository and install the "nautilus-admin" package. Of course, this doesn't fix this bug!
