I think the problem here is that /dev/pts is actually NOT mounted. I get the following lines (when attempting to update) in between the two code snippets that Scott posted:
Preconfiguring packages ... E: Can not write log (Is /dev/pts mounted?) - posix_openpt (2: No such file or directory) I believe that this is related to Debian Bug #788580.
