I was brave and tried the installation anew: it went better, it just
hung in the end, restoring previous packages, and I stopped it with
the X in the corner. But the installation seems to be functional, I'm
using it right now.

The difference was that I started the installation from grub menu, not
from live system. And possibly my mistake, the first time, was that I
had the target partition mounted when I started the installation, but
I'm not sure about this.
