tried it out.  It doesn't seem to correct my problems (using wireless-
dev kernel and bcm43xx).

attached is a log where I booted up, then inserted the bcm4318 pcmcia
card.  This gets it onto the wpa network, but once I try to switch to
the unecnrypted one, it fails.  iwconfig showed the ESSID did change
after a few seconds, but after a little more time the essid went to
off/any and attempts to go back on the WPA network also fail.
