I found the cause of my desktop freezing. When I had the compositor set to use opengl3.1 it caused segfaults. libQt5Sql would segfault or libnvidia-opengl would segfault. If vlc was opened then the whole desktop would freeze. This is when running a Nvidia 9 series card (GTX 980 in my case) with the non-free driver and changing the opengl version that the compositor uses. (settings -> Display -> Compositor -> Rendering Backend)
