Public bug reported:

Ubuntu version 14.04.3 LTS
vlc version 2.1.6-0ubuntu14.04.1

The vlc ncurses interface causes memory corruption when viewing a
picture without $DISPLAY

Steps to reproduce:
1. open a xterm-compatible terminal emulator
2. unset the DISPLAY environment variable but leave TERM intact
3. run vlc with "vlc -I ncurses" (ncurses interface only, other ones don't work)
4. Save a dummy picture (screenshot?)
5. open the picture

Memory corruption is caused if gnome-terminal is used as the terminal
emulator.
