** Attachment added: "Xorg.0.log before I worked around the problem"
   http://launchpadlibrarian.net/9483442/Xorg.0.log

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

The radeon driver would ignore the following settings in my xorg.conf, so it
thought the monitor could only support 640x480 resolution.
    HorizSync 30.0 - 110.0
    VertRefresh 50.0 - 160.0

I fixed the problem by adding these two options to Section "Device":
    Option "CRT2HSync" "30-110"
    Option "CRT2VRefresh" "50-160"

I also had to remove some of the really high resolution/refresh rates
that were added by displayconfig-gtk when I selected my monitor as
Viewsonic P95f+ to stop this error.

  Fatal server error:
  Caught signal 11. Server aborting

I can now run my monitor at [EMAIL PROTECTED] but it would be nice if it
worked without having to specify CRT2HSync and CRT2VRefresh manually.
+
+ I didn't have this problem at all in Feisty. I am currently running Gutsy
with:
+ xserver-xorg 1:7.2-5ubuntu9
+ xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.6.193-1ubuntu1
