I updated to network-manager 0.6.5-0ubuntu14 today and it corrected the problem. The only remaining thing I see wrong is that while /etc/resolv.conf gets overwritten correctly with the peer DNS from the VPN, the local routing doesn't seem to use it (e.g. I can use dig to find servers over the VPN, but pinging those same servers results in "cannot find host" errors).
