Just to note - 
On Ubuntu-gnome 15.10 install, same hardware have gotten nvidia via 
nvidia-prime to work. Initially on fresh install it did the same, ie. black 
greeter, black login.
Downgrading those 2 xorg packages & a reboot allowed nvidia to work. Then 
upgraded xserver back & it still worked fine. 
Today there was a kernel & some other upgrades, after reboot nvidia again 
failed thru several boot up attempts. Downgraded initramfs-tools/bin, reboot & 
works again. Upgraded initramfs-tools/bin & continues to work.
So - 
Makes no sense at all..

A fresh 15.10 Ubuntu install on same hardware today remains totally unable to 
use nvidia thru nvidia prime, xorg crash report on first attempted login is 
here, likely unremarkable & possibly worthless due to no various debug symbols
