that's still unspecific, because it's not clear wheter a (all) clients
do not repaint or are entirely stalled or the compositor doesn't update
or is stalled.
if shift+alt+f12 works only the compositor doesn't update, if not, it
either doesn't respond or the issue is in the clients ("applications",
including the desktop shell) or X11.
For any progress, it's crucial to localize the problem - it's not
possible to fix symptoms.
