Public bug reported:
Steps to reproduce:
1. create a `git` repository and a directory `d` with permission `rwx------`
owned by `root:root` and file `d/f`
2. run `git status` as non-root user
There's no info that `git` wasn't able to read `d/` which is misleading
with a larger set of changes.
