same problem for me.
i got the libpurpletorchat.so installed, too.
without the torchat-plugin it will start from menu
with this plugin it wont start from menu or .desktop-files with this error:
kernel: [ 537.033009] pidgin[2981]: segfault at 5 ip 00000005 sp
bfacbfd8 error 14 in libpurpletorchat.so[abc50000+9a000]
so i have to start from commandline:
GeCk0eee ~ $ pidgin
Oct 15 20:31:51.883 [W] plugin has been compiled with -dDebugToConsole.
Not recommended.
Oct 15 20:31:52.670 [M] plugin loaded
im running Linux Mint 17 (newest version with all possible updates installed)
