I caught the an unexpected disconnect event behavior and this is the
iwconfig info:

iwconfig
eth0 no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=20 dBm
          Retry short limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off

lo no wireless extensions.

Reconnection in this case was successful after a manual selection of the
SSID again. This manual reconnection process is not always successful
with every disconnect event.

Upon reconnecting the iwconfig shows:
iwconfig
eth0 no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"umd-secure"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: 18:9C:5D:EF:CB:C2
          Bit Rate=7.2 Mb/s Tx-Power=19 dBm
          Retry short limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:on
          Link Quality=32/70 Signal level=-78 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:398 Invalid misc:392 Missed beacon:0

lo no wireless extensions.
