Please note that in your last comment, you appeared to be typing "gramps v" instead of "gramps -v". Gramps 4.2.0 is about to be released with the new Ubuntu Wily (15.10), so feel free to purge all your copies of Gramps and upgrade to the latest Ubuntu and reinstall Gramps.
