I'm using the MATE PPA http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mate- dev/ppa/ubuntu/ with Ubuntu 12.04.5, and get the same issue, so I'm not sure it's related to specific versions of Ubuntu. If there are any suitable packages for me to report on versions for, Id be happy to do so.
