The best solution for this is probably to finish off the external- metadata-extractor branch, which was set aside earlier this year.
I've updated the branch to get it building with trunk, but there is still a bit of work to do (there may be conflicts with the branches from the pending silo, and maybe some tweaks to the AppArmor profiles).
