This should be a show-stopper bug. It's a feature that was made easily accessible to the user (by its inclusion in the panel), yet it causes the user to lose control of the computer after using it. If the user doesn't know how to get back to the previously used account, they may potentially lose their data.
I have the same problem with my acer laptop (also a synaptic touchpad). I think this also happens on my desktop as well.
