Public bug reported:

When running npm install within a ubuntu/trusty64 vagrant image from
within a mounted shared folder, it fails with symbolic errors and ENOENT
lstat errors. On switching the type of the shared folder to "rsync" ,
there are no errors when running npm install from the same directory.
