This is the proximity sensor kicking in. When the screen is woken up by a notification, we keep it aware of proximity to avoid accidental presses while you take the phone out of your pocket. I'm afraid I don't have a good idea how to avoid this behaviour while keeping it so you don't accidentally hit buttons in the UI.
