Indeed Jussi is correct. Thanks. The documentation I had been looking at for grub had no '#' in front of groot when it was described. However, I see in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto under Automagic Kernels List that a single # in front of groot is used to set the global. Sigh. Mine had whatever was there -- (hd0,1). I've now changed it in my menu.lst.
I wonder how many other folk have been caught by this. A very unfortunate choice of convention.
