Indeed Jussi is correct. Thanks. The documentation I had been looking at for 
grub had no '#' in front of groot when it was described.
However, I see in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto under Automagic 
Kernels List that a single # in front of groot is
used to set the global. Sigh. Mine had whatever was there -- (hd0,1). I've now 
changed it in my menu.lst.

I wonder how many other folk have been caught by this. A very
unfortunate choice of convention. It reminds me of the sarcastic rumour
circulating in Nigeria in the early 70s that when the changeover from
driving on the left (as per UK) to the right, truck drivers would change
over 3 days early to get some practice.
