I believe this is a bug in ubuntu and not in Krusader, smplayer or
Skype. Did some research online and issuing sudo killall -9 unity-
settings-daemon seems to have an effect on things - although it does not
solve the glitches.

** Description changed:

  After booting, everything works fine for a while. But after a while, the
  GUI of various apps stop working and start being misaligned and badly
  rendered. See attached screenshots.
