My 15.10 "system" started to show quite similar symptoms today. Booting
with systemd the progress stops in the graphics  'ubuntu * * * * *'
displayed at the center of the screen. After maybe one minute the the
screen goes black and couple of lines are displayed proposing some
alternatives like to display journal, try again the boot.

With "upstart" booting is ok.

The behaviour has been the same for more than 10 tries.

I have not applied the patch referred above.

My laptop is dualboot Asus G751JY, with NVidia GTX 980M graphics
Linux 4.2.0-16-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP Thu Oct 8 15:35:06 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 
x86_64 GNU/Linux
Windows 10

The journal is attached.
