Public bug reported:

I upgraded 15.04 Ubuntu Gnome to 15.10 Ubuntu Gnome using default dist-
upgrade. During the upgrade process , the screen got locked. After few
hours I tried to check, how the upgrade was progressing, but I was
unable to unlock the screen. Lock-screen failed to take keyboard input
properly, and displayed cryptic error message instead. It seemed like it
was trying to log me in with some non-sensible password (?), on each key
press (?). I tried to login as a separate user, but this lead to blank
black screen.

As a consequence, I cannot know whether the upgrade process went
smoothly. Fortunately, Ubuntu rebooted into Ubuntu 15.10, and Synaptic
says no packages are missing, so maybe dist-upgrade succeeded after all?
