Just installed ubuntu 15.10 and the cpu fan started increasing in speed for no apparent reason at random times then slowing down... most annoying. Whilst investigating this I thought I would try fancontrol... but this did not seem to be able to help leaving the cpu fan blasting away at full speed and so I uninstalled fancontrol with sudo apt-get purge fancontrol
This left /etc/fancontrol on the disk and not correctly configured .. I thought this a bit odd so sudo apt-get install fancontrol and the install failed and I ended up at this bug after the automatic bug report system sent me here... .. So the next thing to do was delete /etc/fancontrol and re-install fancontrol and I did not get this crash. and the install worked just fine. Still not enabled fancontrol because my pc does not seem to like PWM fan control so I will hope that the CPU fan stays well controlled. Not sure if this experience will help anyone... but the tip is see if /etc/fancontrol is already on the disk and if the sudo apt-get install fancontrol fails have a look at the contents of that file / back it up / delete it and try again. Pity that sudo apt-get purge fancontrol does not purge all the configuration...
