Since "dell-smm-hwmon" seems to be an alias of the i8k module, and based on the solution from the #100121 of the kernel bug tracker, blacklist "dell-smm-hwmon" resolved the issue at least on my Dell Studio XPS 8000. I tried many hard reboots to confirm this.
