"generic default monitor" is the name written by debconf (dpkg-
reconfigure xserver-xorg) into your xorg.conf.
Are your resolutions not detected correctly? Actually the list of
monitors is for monitors that have got a broken edid (the monitor can
report its possible settings to the os) and so cannot be detected
automatically.
