just an update - we could completely revert the occlusion changes back
to a couple of weeks ago to get back to the original baseline. however
there is a real issue where qtmir is getting confused due to some buffer
dropping logic and getting out of sync with what actually needs
updating. our preference is to spend the time to actually correct this
problem rather than further feature reverting
