You can kill WoW.exe by using the -9 option, so kill -9 <pid> will kill World of Warcraft. I hoped the upgrade to wine 0.9.45 would fix the problem, but it didn't.
One more option to keep sound while alt-tabbing is to play in Windowed mode and then making the window fullscreen.
