It doesn't happen with the upstream 7.2 binary (http://ds9.si.edu/archive/linux64/ds9.linux64.7.2.tar.gz). It doesn't happen with the upstream 7.3.2 binary either (although that one has other problems; most notably unix socket support seems to have been left out of the build, which gives IRAF users fits (not the data format)). I can't easily backport your 7.3 or 7.4 packages to 14.04 due to the need to rebuild python-tk and python3-tk when backporting blt 2.5. I'll have another bug report for you soon against the Debian 7.3.2 package, with a patch.
