Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Boot from gutsy live CD on a system capable of supporting visual effects
(I'm using a dell d620).
2. Open appearance preferences from system->preferences, select "none".
3. Close appearance preferences.
4. Reopen appearance preferences, select "Normal".

Expected result:

Normal effects now enabled.

Actual result:

Appearance preferences application hangs. No updates to window are seen.

Reproducible every time.

     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
