Steps to reproduce:
1. Boot from gutsy live CD on a system capable of supporting visual effects
(I'm using a dell d620).
2. Open appearance preferences from system->preferences, select "none".
3. Close appearance preferences.
4. Reopen appearance preferences, select "Normal".
Expected result:
Normal effects now enabled.
Actual result:
Appearance preferences application hangs. No updates to window are seen.
Reproducible every time.
