Public bug reported: KUbtuntu 15.10 is simply an abomination which should die. Congratulations - you managed to make me hate KDE5. It's absolutely U-N-S-T-A-B-L-E. Not sure what to start with - there is almost nothing to consider positive about it:
I am running it on a HP laptop with i7, 8GB RAM, 200 GB HDD, NVidia graphics card, dedicated swap partition, NVidia proprietary BLOB driver 352, arandr etc. The laptop is always used in docked mode, with 2 external DisplayPort displays and laptop lid closed. The KUbuntu 14.x aka Trusty WORKED PERFECTLY. After upgrading to 15.10 Willy (which went through 15.04 Vivid Velvet as intermediary stage), NOTHING WORKS AS IT SHOULD ANYMORE. I simply hate this stupid OS. Reasons: 01. Super-slow boot up. It takes about 5 minutes from powering up to actually get to the plasma SDDM and enter a login and finally get to a visible and working desktop. 02. After fiddling with tens of System Settings->Power Management settings, the 15.10 was simply entering suspend mode when the laptop lid was closed, even with the laptop docked and 2 external monitors connected. Immediately after booting up. The KDE power settings were 100% ineffective. Only after searching for about a week on the Internet, I found the real fix - editing a certain line in /etc/systemd/systemd.conf to ignore laptop lid close events. 03. KDE multi-display is UNSTABLE. Even with the latest NVidia 358 driver and making sure to go with System Settings->Monitors, and arranging the external monitors and turning off the laptop's own LCD display, and defining a primary display, the settings do not seem to stick. It is always something random/a hit and miss: after one reboot you see the 2nd monitor as primary, on the next reboot you see the first, sometimes you get to see the laptop's own LCD re-enabled and have that set to primary etc. THIS IS MADNESS, I can't stand this anymore. 04. When I manage to get those 2 external displays right, if I power them off, one by one and then try to power them on back, let's say in the same order, NOTHING HAPPENS. The screens remain black and only the mouse cursor is seen. I can't do anything except for switching to a TTYS text console and triggering a reboot or a 'sudo service sddm restart' 05. If I attempt a desktop lock, the screens go again all black and only the mouse cursor is seen. The only thing I can do is a reboot from a text TTYs. And when doing a reboot, the whole X64 PC freezes. I have to simply hit the power button on the docking station or the laptop for 4s+ and power the damn thing off and re-power on. 06. KDE Mail 2 no longer works as expected. Any message shown in the bottom message preview pane shows << Grantlee "" theme is invalid". ON ANY MESSAGE that I select. 07. I had to redefine my kwallet password to be blank. Because otherwise the Akonady was always prompting me for a password EACH time on OS startup. 08. Apps open and their window geometry and position (KDE session info) are no longer persisted/restored upon the next startup. 09. The window decorations do not seem to preserve their color. For example, I was selecting "Oxygen" to be used - sometimes the background color of the decorations is the same with the rest, but sometimes gets dark. 10. Unstable system tray icons. Sometimes they show like black-and-white from "breeze" scheme, other times, the KDEMail's own icon (which I always prefer) takes precendence, or if you chose Oxygen as icon theme, is not honored. 11. The new KDE START MENU SIMPLY SUCKS. PLEASE BRING BACK THE START MENU FROM KDE4/KUbuntu 14.x Trusty LTE! That one was BEAUTIFUL - with TABBED sub-menus, AND SUPER-FUNCTIONAL. The one from KDE5/Breeze IS A CRAP. 12. The KDE Desktop more often than not, CRASHES. Yesterday I've tried to open a .wav file with Amarok. And the whole PC froze. THE WHOLE OS, not only KDE. I could not even switch with ALT-F1 to a TTYs text console. 13. Sometimes the automatic updates systray notifier announces about some updates. Then you decide to download to install them. The Muon system updater will kick in, but no updates will be reported actually as being available! 14. The bottom main task bar is simply UNSTABLE. It seems to have a mind of its own - sometimes it keeps the height that I have customized for it, other times it gets smaller / almost unreadable. 15. MANY MANY other issues. Unexpected crashes. Even bring the task manager (CTRL+ESC) sometimes triggers a crash. Or windows losing their decorations (i.e. the "x" close button on top-right side etc) PLEASE PLEASE, help me downgrade back to my TRUSTFUL AND BEAUTIFUL, PERFECT K/Ubuntu 14.x ! It was working PERFECTLY. Sorry to say, but this so-called "stable" KUbuntu 15.x is not CRAP, but something WORSE than crap - A Diarrhea. Congratulations KDE and Ubuntu team - somehow you managed to make myself lose confidence in KDE and Linux. This KUbuntu 15.x crap IS WORSE THAN A WINDOWS 95 ! You managed to put Linux and KDE names TO SHAME. Shame on you developers. Now I can no longer use my Eclipse CDT and KUbuntu for reliable C and C++ embedded development, and somehow I am forced to re- install KUbuntu 14.x from scratch. Which is basically slowing me down, and I have deadlines to fulfill at my workplace. How do I justify all of this lost time to my manager?!? If you happen to have an idea on how to seamlessly downgrade to KUbuntu Trusty 14.x LTE, please please shoot an email to [email protected] P.S. I followed also all the instructions regarding adding the KDE backports PPA to the known APT/DPKG repositories. Hoping to get kdemail 5.0.3 updates (I only have 5.0.2) and other package updates. BUT NO NEW PACKAGES are being reported as available - via either 'sudo apt-get update && sudo apt get upgrade' or via the Muon Updater. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: 15.10 kubuntu unstable ** Package changed: python-qt4 (Ubuntu) => ubuntu -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1524179 Title: KUbuntu 15.10 is an abomination - 14.x was the BEST, why change it?
