I followed the discussion on the kubuntu-devel irc channel and my opinion is that the most logical description is "network shares (SMB)" because if you don't have any Windows PC in your network it makes no sense that there are windows shares. Network shares using the NFS protocol should be shown as "Network Shares (NFS)".
