Thanks for your bug report. Your example works for me, and others, this
is highly likely to be a problem with your specific video card and video
card driver stack.
Does the following work around the crash?
close all
graphics_toolkit gnuplot
imshow (a)
If so, then it is likely due to OpenGL problems with your specific video
card and the way that Octave renders plots with OpenGL by default.
