There's a whole class of bugs like this, which I've been beginning to
tag as "gtk-mainloop-crash"; and I don't really know what's causing
them. At the moment, I'm thinking that the best strategy might well be
to switch from my home-grown notebook-based structure to the new
gtk.Assistant.
