I suffered the same problem since I Upgraded to Distribution 6.06 and followings. ( See: Bug #11776, Bug # 114429 ). This has been taking place with Upgraded systems or Downloaded anew. No problem with other PC using AMD64 an Ubuntu for AMD64 or Booting in Recovery mode. It is a pity since Ubuntu 7.10, otherwise, is a fine Distribution!. Gaetano Arena
