Public bug reported:

When switching from 12.02 to 14.04., my vlc lost the ability to browse
my minidlna server.

It seems related to the libupnp library, which is according to apt-cache  
policy libupnp6
libupnp6:
  Installed: 1:1.6.17-1.2


and according to this post, the version 1.6.17 is broken.
