My problem was that on my newer notebook 'HDA Intel PCH' sound card was
not the default for some reason. It's either different hardware or could
also be the fact that I'm using 15.10 instead of 14.04

You may try to change the 'card' parameter in the
.config/volumeicon/volumeicon. It is set to 'default' by default.
Changing it to 'card=hw:1' solved the problem here.
