The problem did end up being bad ram.  The memtester utility spotted it
in seconds, as did the memtest86+ grub-accessible utility.  Do you think
you could modify the installer to say 'this error might be caused by bad
ram, bad disc, or bad drive'?  From the actual error message, I thought
it was a disc or drive error.

Actually, it'd be fantastic if the installer could overcome memory
errors, probably by doing a light memory test of its own before
starting, avoiding using memory that's defective, or doing operations in
duplicate, as it would be unlikely to have identical memory problems in
two different regions.  Oh, and record bad memory in the grub.conf file
as badmwm addresses, since the code is built into the standard Ubuntu
kernel already.
