Pete Savage asked for more information on this several months ago, but
there was no reply. I think I have to assume that this was either a
hardware fault or a kernel bug, but there's really too little
information to be sure ...
Note that CD errors (either burned too quickly, or a dirty drive lens)
can cause operating system problems of a more or less arbitrary nature
when you're running from a live CD.
