After some more testing, it appears to be a hardware problem!
So the ticket can be closed.
It was confusing to find out because some functionality still works, and
that the malfunction coincided with the ubuntu upgrade.
We lost a lot of time with this issue, but the good news is that it's not an
Ubuntu bug!
