I just installed kubuntu 14.10 (the newer one doesn't work at ALL for me, not 
even as 'try out' from CD)
and ran into the same thing at some point. That is: the mouse can be moved and 
interact with open
terminals and the keyboard works. Also auto hiding panels appear when the mouse 
touches their edge.
But the panels do not react at all anymore on left or right clicks, nor does 
the desktop react to a right click.

After a few minutes and a lot of clicks I got a pop-up saying something
like "kdeinit: could not launch /usr/bin/google-chrome-stable". I'm
totally fine with that, that file doesn't exist, but really - why does
it need 5 minutes of desktop freezing to realize that file doesn't
exist?!
