I also have this problem, it started after I finally found out my APC
UPS (350 as well) wasn't configured in my system. At some point it also
gets CPU hoggy...

workaround: kill the process hald-addon-hid-ups and kill apcupsd and
restart /etc/init.d/apcupsd
