The original system is not available for testing, but I was able to reproduce 
this behavior on an alternate test system.  In this test, I altered the 
partition table on /dev/sda to match the reported scenario.  I then attempted a 
14.04 install on /dev/sdb.  From my point of view, I do not want /dev/sda 
touched (it is not the droid you are looking for).
