Followed the excellent instructions in
https://github.com/rlaager/zfs/wiki/HOWTO-Install-Ubuntu-to-a-Native-
ZFS-Root-Filesystem and using the updated zfs-initramfs package I can
now boot just using root=ZFS=rpool/ROOT/ubuntu ro
Thanks for the patch, I'll get this uploaded into Xenial
