** Description changed:

Whenever I try to shutdown my computer, the GNOME desktop will immediately go
to a black screen and the procedure will freeze there. The hdd light is lit
non-stop even though I can't hear my hard drive turning. I let this go for a
while, but it didn't seem to proceed. I don't usually turn my computer off, but
whenever there are updates (and there are many of them with gutsy right now) I
have to go through this. I also tried going into a tty console and shutting
down manually like so:
  sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
  sudo shutdown -h 0.
That worked! and I guess it's a solution to my problem, but there should be a
way I can use my computer without having to do all of this. This way also
doesn't seem to gracefully shutdown applications in GNOME like liferea which
comes back on with unread items that I have already read, e.g.
Which logs should I attach to this?
- The only unusual thing I can think of about my setup is that I am using the
experimental intel driver version 2.1.1 because it seems to be quite a bit
faster for running compiz fusion.
