In Windows as I am sure you are aware upon a shutdown being initiated
Windows attempts to close all open applications without forcing them to
close so that they do so as safely as possible, during this process it
displays which applications need to be closed, and also allows you to
cancel the shutdown in order to deal with the programs, it also offers
an option to force the shutdown so that it forcefully closes all
application. I'm assuming that in Ubuntu the kill command is just sent
to all applications on shutdown or something similar as all the
applications seem to just go whether they want to or not. So I think
that the way Windows does it should at least be an optional feature
which should probably be on by default, but which can be turned off.
I am running Ubuntu GNOME 15.10 with GNOME 3.18, and I am thinking of
the way Windows 7 does it, I don't know how the others do. And obviously
it wouldn't display all the background processes in the applications
list and just say that it is shutting them down after it's dealt with
the other applications.
