I'm using Ubuntu 14.04, installed from scratch, not upgrade. The only unusual setup I can think of is that my root partition is btrfs.
In my case, the problem is intermittent. Some days everything seems to work as expected. When it happens, I launch the system-config-printer tool and open the printer's queue dialog. This sends the jobs to the printer.
