Public bug reported:

Trying to install from live-CD on a Laptop ACER aspire 5050-4697 it loads
kernel and initrd and stalls forever at about
10-20% of loading bar. (*)
The machine is new and has a problematic ACPI.
It would have been nice to be able to access the boot line to add acpi=off.

I was able to start-up Debian Etch 4.0 in this form and from there work to
improve the performance of Linux
on the machine.

The linux-kernel team is taking a look to the acpi problem. I keep a log of
things working, not-working and
how-to.make-it-work at www[dot]df[dot]uba[dot]ar/~solari/acer.html

(*) the CD is OK, I booted and made it work a desktop with it (both
machines AMD64)

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
