1) incorrect wm listed
2) was booted into xfwm4 the whole time
3) killing xfwm4 gets the pointer back
4) this isn't a 'sometimes' thing - it's all the time:
steps:
i) add card
ii) try to move window with alt-click and drag via touchpad
bang, permanently stuck on 'moving' icon until xfwm4 is killed.
